‘Canstruction’ to benefit Jewish Food Pantry

The 11th annual CANstruction® Competition, presented by Charter Communications, will be held at the Saint Louis Science Center Friday, March 18 through Sunday, March 27. Under the leadership of the St. Louis Chapter of the Society for Design Administration (SDA), the community-wide food drive combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry.

Sculptures built almost entirely of canned goods are created by local teams of architects, engineers and students and displayed for the public to see. Once the sculptures are deconstructed, all of the canned goods used are donated to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry and the St. Louis Area Foodbank. This year’s CANstruction® theme, “Climate Change and Endangered Animals,” was chosen to complement the current Climate Change exhibition at the Saint Louis Science Center.

Last year, St. Louis ranked 9th out of 180 cities participating in CANstruction®, by donating 42,720 pounds of food equivalent to 34,176 meals.

Each structure is built almost entirely out of canned goods from Save-A-Lot food stores, a third year sponsor of the event, which will also match every canned good donated at a participating Save-A-Lot store.

Families are invited to visit the Science Center and view the structures or bring more cans to donate and place by their favorite structures. The structure with the most cans at the end of the exhibit will win ‘People’s Choice.’

Also, visitors who donate a can of food to the exhibit will receive $1 off of any OMNIMAX® film, including the highly anticipated Tornado Alley, which also opens Friday, March 18.
