Camp Sabra to celebrate 45 years with alumni reunion weekend
Published June 10, 2015
Camp Sabra, the Jewish Community Center’s co-ed sleepaway camp in Rocky Mount, Missouri, will celebrate its 45th year during a reunion weekend Aug. 20 to 23, during which all former campers and staff are invited back to camp.
“When summer is over, you leave camp, but camp never leaves you,” said Camp Sabra Director Terri Grossman, who also attended the camp as a child. “That’s why we wanted to mark our 45th anniversary by celebrating with the campers and staff who have made Sabra such a special place.”
A portion of the cost to attend the reunion event will go toward the Mickey Rosen Scholarship Fund. Named after Sabra’s esteemed former Assistant Director who dedicated his life helping the less fortunate, the Mickey Rosen Scholarship Fund gives underprivileged children the opportunity to experience the magic of Camp Sabra.
Reunion attendees will be coming from coast to coast, and perhaps even from across the globe. Registrations have come in from Sabra strongholds like St. Louis, Kansas City, Houston, Dallas, Memphis and Omaha, and the network has expanded as registrations have already been received from alumni living in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and other locales.
“Many of our counselors, senior staff, and parents of current campers were Sabra campers themselves,” added Grossman. “That says a lot about our camp and the lifelong, expansive community it creates.”
Reunion weekend events include:
• Thursday, Aug. 20: At 7 p.m. the weekend begins in St. Louis with “Skip Around the Roof,” an event held on the rooftop of the fabulous Moonrise Hotel in the historic University City Loop. Attendees will join friends arriving from across the country and local alumni, too, for an evening sharing camp stories and catching up. Food and live entertainment will be provided.
• Friday, Aug. 21 to Sunday, Aug. 23: Alumni are invited back to Camp Sabra for a weekend of campfires, special activities, song sessions and hanging out in their favorite places at camp. In addition, they will see enhancements like the new infirmary, drama pavilion, girls’ shower house and new cabins.
