CAJE, Nishmah plan women’s learning opportunities

Nishmah and CAJE Adult Education have partnered to offer Jewish women of all ages and backgrounds new study and experiential learning opportunities to explore Judaism through fiction, traditional texts or cooking. The following classes are planned:

• Contemporary Jewish Writers: In this discussion-based class, participants will examine the work of contemporary Jewish writer Edith Pearlman’s book “Binocular Vision.” Participants will explore female characters and the themes that combine to give insights into the complexities of Jewish life. The mini-course, taught by Marcia Moskowitz, will be offered over three sessions: Wednesday Jan. 14, 21 and 28.  All sessions will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center Staenberg Family Complex, 2 Millstone Campus Drive. Participants must purchase their own copy of the book. Tuition is $30 for the course or $10 per session.

• A Taste of Tu B’Shevat: This cooking event will focus on vegetarian dishes featuring the fruits and vegetables of the Land of Israel. The evening will include hands-on cooking opportunities, demonstrations, Israeli wine tasting and conclude with a feast. Participants will leave with new ideas, skills and recipes. The course takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 in the kosher kitchen at Traditional Congregation, 12437 Ladue Road. The cost is $20 per person; space is limited.

• Hidden, Forgotten, Forbidden? Lesser Known Jewish Women in the Tanach: Stories of women are buried in the pages of Jewish tradition; uncovering them creates an opportunity to discover insights and lessons rich with messages for today. Sessions will focus on Rizpah, Rebecca the Nurse of Rachel, Irit the Wife of Lot. This mini-course, taught by Cyndee Levy, will be offered over three sessions:  Tuesdays, Feb. 17, 24, and March 3.  All sessions will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the JCC Staenberg Family Complex.
