Bais Abraham Congregation honors ‘A Pair of Jacks’

Bais Abraham Congregation welcomes the community for hearty hors d’oeuvres and serious desserts as the congregation honors Jack Shapiro and presents Jack Tepper with its Bayit Award.

The event, from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 at Bais Abraham, 6910 Delmar Boulevard in University City will feature Marc B. Shapiro who will speak on “Sense and Censorship: Is Historical Truth a Traditional Jewish Value?”

The event, catered by Elisheva Margulies of Eat with Eli,  will include a silent auction. Tickets are $75 per person. It is being chaired by Simone Picker; auction committee members are Barbra Danin, Tessa Gardner and Lisa Satanovsky.

Jack Shapiro has been a member of Bais Abraham for more than 30 years and his lively “Halacha Highlight” column in the Shmooze, Bais Abe’s weekly newsletter, has a devoted readership. Jack and his wife, Phyllis, raised their three children, Michael, Daphna and Edan, at Bais Abe.

Tepper has been an unsung hero at the shul – avoiding the limelight, while doing much behind the scenes.

Shapiro holds the Weinberg Chair in Judaic Studies at the University of Scranton.

His ideas often challenge the bounds of the conventional Orthodox understanding of Judaism using Modern Orthodox methodology. Shapiro is on the faculty of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and is a popular online lecturer at www.torahinmotion.org.
