Bais Abe welcomes Orthodox feminist group for program on women reciting Kaddish

Bais Abraham welcomes the community for a program by Ta Shma on “A Daughter’s Recitation of Kaddish,” which will explore the sources for women saying Kaddish at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3. The event is free and open to the community.

Ta Shma is a national series of the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance (JOFA), presenting an in-depth look at laws that affect women’s obligations and involvement in ritual life. This year, St. Louis is one of the four cities to which JOFA is bringing the program. There will be a pre-program “Meet JOFA” supper for sponsors ($36 or more) – an opportunity to meet JOFA Program Director Karen Sponder, as well as the guest speaker, Sara Tillinger Wolkenfeld.

Sara Tillinger Wolkenfeld currently works as a Jewish Learning Initiative (JLI) on Campus educator at Princeton University. Her talk, “A Daughter’s Recitation of Kaddish,” examines halachic literature to answer questions including: May a daughter recite the mourner’s Kaddish? May she recite Kaddish alone or must it be in conjunction with a man? Must she recite Kaddish aloud or only quietly?
