Art exhibit of challah covers to open at Jewish Community Center

The Museum of Imajewnation and the J present “Drama on the Shabbat Table,” an art exhibit of challah covers which will be on display at the JCC Staenberg Family Complex’s Beit Midrash from May 22 to June 10.

The exhibit is open during JCC building hours and there will be a special opening event from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 22 to view the exhibit and enjoy a free wine and challah reception for family and friends.  A second special event will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 26 where visitors may participate in an unrehearsed, improvised storytelling experience probing the challenges of shifting family dynamics through the metaphor of the challah cover.

Inspired by the midrash that says we cover the challah so that it doesn’t feel bad when the wine is blessed first, the event will explore topics such as birth order, sibling rivalry, and the challenges of becoming in-laws, parents and grandparents.  As an option, bring a challah cover, real or imagined, actual or symbolic that helped to soothe a hurt in your life.

RSVPs are strongly encouraged for either event to Naomi Fishman at 314-477-5772 or [email protected].  This exhibit is being coordinated by the Museum of Imajewnation and JCC Helene Mirowitz Center of Jewish Community Life.
