This September, the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield celebrates 25 years and will mark its silver anniversary with three events throughout the month. Given this milestone, we figured we’d take the opportunity to remind the St. Louis Jewish community of the Butterfly House’s Jewish roots.
Twenty-five years of the Butterfly House
The Butterfly House opened its doors to the public on Sept. 18, 1998 to provide educational opportunities to a diverse visitorship. It offers education programs, special events, lectures and, of course, the chance to witness butterflies in two habitats, one native and one tropical.
Louis S. Sachs, a prominent real estate executive and developer who donated land for the Chesterfield branch of the Jewish Community Center initiated the lead gift to build and name the Butterfly House in honor of his mother-in-law, Sophie M. Sachs.
Sachs was a Missouri Botanical Gardens trustee for more than a decade and a strong supporter of its development.
Three celebrations
The Butterfly House will host three events throughout September, including free admission on Sept. 19, a movie night in Faust Park, and a “silver-screen”-themed soiree at the end of the month.
