For a century, tens of thousands of Jewish teens have grown up as part of BBYO, the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization. That tradition is still thriving in St. Louis, and now it’s time to dust off those photo albums, reconnect with old friends and join the celebration.
BBYO St. Louis invites friends, family, alumni and the entire Jewish community to honor 100 years of youth leadership and legacy at the BBYO Centennial Celebration, set for Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center’s Early Childhood Education Center.
One of the highlights of the celebration will be a Pop-Up Museum, featuring a collection of memorabilia, artifacts and photos illustrating the organization’s 100-year history.
“One of the stories I really enjoy is from SLC ’78,” said Gabe Raskin, regional director of the St. Louis Council and a second-generation BBYO member. “This includes a journal log with detailed plans for a surprise kidnap program led by the Council Presidents, board report submissions, challenges the council was facing and other fun highlights. We’ll also have multiple scrapbooks and photos showcasing chapter experiences, creating a real game of ‘Jewish Geography’ as people look through the photos and recall friendships and good times.”
The St. Louis Council has long been a key part of BBYO’s Mid-America Region, connecting Jewish teens from St. Louis, Kansas City, Omaha and Minnesota.
Today, the council has six active chapters and more than 260 high school members, along with BBYO Connect programming for younger teens. The St. Louis community has provided tremendous support for BBYO over the years.
“We work closely with B’nai Amoona and Central Reform Congregation to start new chapters, while United Hebrew Congregation hosts one of our chapters regularly,” Raskin said. “The JCC and Federation provide excellent resources for programming, and I’m extremely grateful for everyone’s support. Last year, we collaborated with several Jewish organizations to host a Hanukkah Havdalah Party that engaged Jewish teens from across St. Louis in a meaningful and fun evening.”
Tickets for the Centennial Celebration are $18, with proceeds benefiting BBYO St. Louis operations, programming and scholarships.
