New direction for Unsung Heroes

By Ellen Futterman, Editor

As many of you are aware, for the past 10 years the Jewish Light has been honoring Unsung Heroes both in the paper’s Oy! Magazine and at a special event in the spring. After 10 successful magazines and events, we’ve decided to switch things up.

Rather than honoring 10 heroes in one magazine or at one event, we are going to celebrate the contributions of one amazing volunteer every month in the paper, starting in March. We want to spread the love — and their stories — throughout the year rather than just one time.

As has been the case in years past, we are asking for your help in the form of nominations. Specifically, these nominations should reflect those in the community who are making a major impact without seeking substantial public recognition for their efforts. In a sense, they literally fly under the radar.

Honorees can be individuals or groups who are either Jewish or non-Jewish making a difference within the Jewish community and/or Jewish individuals or groups making an impact in the community-at-large.

A committee of Jewish leaders from all streams of Judaism as well as the unaffiliated, and ranging in age and life experience, will help the Light review the nominations and make the 10 selections.

Find a nomination form online at www.stljewishlight.com/nominate. The forms will also be included in the paper for several weeks, starting with our Jan. 1 edition. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Feb. 7.
