Lena Dunham and other hipsters flock to Scott Stringer benefit

The race for New York City comptroller just got cool for probably the first time ever thanks to one of the city’s coolest Jewish women, Lena Dunham.
“When Scott told me he was running for comptroller, the first thing I did was Google the word comptroller … I thought the comptroller was the guy who rode on the back of the fire truck and steered!” Dunham said Tuesday night at “Young New York for Scott Stringer,” a fundraiser at the Maritime Hotel in Chelsea. Other artsy guests included photographer Terry Richardson fashion designers Pamela Love and Chrissie Miller.
Dunham, who lives in Brooklyn Heights, talked about her concerns about gentrification and how she’s on board with Stringer’s support for tenants rights and affordable housing.
If young people in New York “struggle for too long,” she said, “they move, in some cases, to Tampa. We can’t have our generation’s Patti Smith moving to Tampa!”
The love went both ways, with Stringer sharing that he is a “Girls” fan. And it seemed he appreciated the unusual level of glamour associated with his campaign.
“A lot of people in this room never realized how exciting municipal finance can be,” the current Manhattan borough president said. “It is cool to be in a comptrollers campaign now. That has never happened in the history of the United States, I recognize that.”
