This past Sunday morning, July 9th, over 80 people filled the social hall of Agudas Israel to hear a presentation given by Bill Kafig and Rabbi Yitzchak Kowalsky in preparation for the upcoming solar eclipse taking place on August 21st. Kafig described the scientific process of a solar eclipse in great detail, discussing the cycle of the orbits and our ability to see this phenomenon here on earth. Kowalsky shared the Torah perspective on solar eclipses, including the importance for a Jew to understand how the orbits work, whether or not a blessing is said, what omen an eclipse signifies, the religious laws pertaining to an eclipse and the proper Torah response to commemorating such an event.
