Barnes-Jewish

THROWBACK THURSDAY • A December 1995 edition of the Light, featuring an article about Barnes Hospital and Jewish Hospital merger on the front page. The merger ensured both hospitals survival in an increasingly complex, competitive and rapidly changing healthcare environment. Both hospitals have a proud history and both grew out of a mission to serve needy religious constituencies.  Jewish Hospital was established to care for poor immigrant Jews and provide a place for Jewish doctors to practice medicine in less tolerant times.  Barnes Hospital was a gift of Robert Barnes, a Catholic, who believed the Methodists were the neediest people in the city in the early 20th century.
