The recent incident at Nipher Middle School in Kirkwood serves as a stark reminder of how quickly classrooms can become battlegrounds for divisive symbols and language. These moments highlight the importance of equipping students with the tools to navigate such complex situations.
ADL webinar to counter Antisemitism
To help address these challenges, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is offering a webinar on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. CST titled Championing Justice: Fostering Allyship for Jewish Students and Inclusive Classrooms. This session aims to provide students—and by extension, parents and teachers—with the resources to counter antisemitism and foster an environment of inclusivity.
Here are five key takeaways for parents and educators to help support their students:
How to be an effective Ally
Drawing from ADL’s “6 Ways To Be an Ally” resource, students will learn practical strategies for standing up against antisemitism and supporting their Jewish classmates. Adults can reinforce these lessons at home and in school settings, helping to cultivate allyship.
Recognizing and responding to bias
Real-life examples of antisemitism and other identity-based biases will be explored, giving students insights into how to identify and respond to these incidents. Parents and educators play a critical role in reinforcing these lessons through discussion and guidance.
Creating inclusive classrooms
The session will explore strategies to foster classroom environments where every student feels respected, regardless of their background. Teachers, with the support of parents, can implement these practices to create welcoming, inclusive spaces for all students.
Leading change in school communities
Beyond responding to bias, students will be encouraged to take active roles in promoting inclusivity and challenging discrimination. Parents and teachers can empower students by encouraging leadership in these areas within the school community.
Understanding identity-based hate in a broader context
While antisemitism will be a focal point, the session will offer strategies applicable to addressing other forms of identity-based hate. This broad understanding will help students—and those guiding them—better navigate and respond to various forms of discrimination.
This webinar is a valuable opportunity for students to learn how to navigate the complexities of modern classrooms and become champions of justice in their communities. Register today to ensure your student doesn’t miss out on this important learning experience.
