Jackson Stern, United Hebrew Congregation

Jackson loves sports, is inspired by athletes and loves to hang out with his friends. He combined these interests by volunteering with the Lift for Life Gym for his mitzvah project.

Along with his parents, Julie and Randy Stern of Chesterfield, Jackson visited the Gym and was amazed at how many kids were working out, studying, playing board games, computers and just relaxing.

Opened since 1988, the Lift for Life Gym serves children ages 8-18 living in city neighborhoods and has become a haven and a second home where they can get a nutritious meal, do their homework, see friends and exercise.

“This is like their J,”Jackson said.

“He really took in the fact that his J is very, very nice and that these kids seemed very happy with their gym, although at the same time, there was a lot of need,” noted his mother.

The “need” refers to gym equipment, a volunteer fitness trainer, gas cards and insurance for the van, food supplies, sponsors for the basketball teams, computers and, of course, money. The fact that many of these kids get their only hot meal of the day from the gym amazed Jackson. Another eye opener was the difficulty some of the kids have in just getting to the gym from their home. It can, sometimes, be too dangerous. Jackson realized the need for transportation was huge.

Jackson hosted a “Dunk Party” in his backyard with all proceeds going to the Lift for Life Gym. He invited friends and family to stop by, bring their friends and make a donation for a chance to dunk him in a dunking booth. Even Jackson’s parents got in on the action, which generated a few big donations. “It was a perfect sunny morning for everyone to just hang out and spend time together,” said Jackson’s mother. “It was a huge hit with the kids and a very successful morning for the gym. Jackson raised $1,936,” she continued.

“I was amazed at the generosity of my friends and family,” said Jackson, a student at Crestview Middle School.  “I learned a lot about what it means to ask for help for something you believe in, about receiving from others, and about being grateful.”  And the Gym was very appreciative.  Jackson knows that the money will go to good use.

The Stern family would like to continue helping the Lift for Life Gym in the future. “It is truly an amazing place for kids and there are lots of opportunities for involvement,” said Jackson.

The Gym provides a free, safe, and enriching environment where kids can strengthen their bodies, enrich their mind, develop healthy relationships and learn to make positive life choices.  Free transportation to and from the Gym is provided. The Gym also helps build self-esteem, teaches goal setting, and rewards responsible behavior with “Gym dollars” which can be redeemed for snacks, movie tickets and special field trips. Summer camp opportunities are available and birthdays are celebrated monthly.
