My grandfather, Baba, used to joke how because he was Jewish, he’d never lose weight. He would remind us how many of our holidays were based on the idea that someone didn’t like us, someone tried to kill us, we survived, and now we can eat!  And, in reminding ourselves of this survival, we often go with something sweet, to remember the sweetness of life. So, why not enjoy a sweet treat any time of the year.

Hamantaschen in July

Apparently, Jodie Bertish from Delectable Dough Baking Company is in strong agreement, because all this month, she is hosting a month-long tribute to Hamantaschen.

Hamantaschen are the triangular pastries associated with the holiday of Purim, when Jews read from the Book of Esther, the Megillah, and celebrate the triumph of good (Esther) over evil (Haman, who planned to destroy the Jewish people).
The cookie itself is also highly symbolic; the most common interpretation is that they resemble the three-cornered hat worn by Haman.

“Customers often ask us if we make Hamantaschen all year long?” said Bertish. “We will make them by special order but usually only make large quantities during Purim.”

But, the demand was so great, that last year Bertish and her team started a “Hamantaschen in July” and it’s back again this year.
“It also allows us to offer more specialized flavors when we aren’t making thousands of Hamantaschen during Purim,” said Bertish.

Traditional Hamantaschen flavors are poppy, prune, apple, cherry, and apricot. In honor of the “Hamantaschen in July” several new flavors are on the menu including Strawberry Funfetti, Chocolate Cherry, Peaches and Cream, Lemon Meringue, and Caramel Apple.

And just in case you need a celebration to enjoy these sweet treats, Bertish has you covered.

“Purim is a joyous festival commemorating the survival of the Jewish people who were marked for death by their Persian rulers. In other words, they won their freedom. On July 4th, we also celebrate America’s freedom from the British empire. Since both of these holidays have celebrations related to freedom we felt that July would be an appropriate time to offer Hamantaschen to our customers.”

So, celebrate away America.
