Edwards-Cohen Engagement

Marcy Smith Edwards and Dr. Stephen Cohen have announced their engagement. Marcy is the daughter of David and Barbara Smith of Creve Coeur and the late Judy Smith. Steve is the son of the late Diana and Herbert Cohen.

The bride-to-be is a graduate of Ladue High School. She attended Arizona State University and also got to travel around the world in the “Semester at Sea” program. She ultimately earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from the University of Texas.

Her fiancé graduated from South Shore High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology, a Bachelor of Arts in science education, a Bachelor of Science in optical science and a Doctor of Optometry degree. He has been in private practice in Scottsdale, Ariz., since 1985. He is a past-president of the Arizona Optometric Association; a past-recipient of the “Optometrist of the Year” for both Arizona and for the 11 Western States; twice selected as one of the “Top 10” eye care practices in the United States, top eye care practice in Arizona; five years in a row as number one in Scottsdale, and four times “Top 10” in Arizona.

The couple met through one of Steve’s patients, who was also a tennis friend of Marcy. Steve and Marcy realized that they had theater season tickets for the same performance, two seats apart. In addition to theater, they love music, playing Pickleball, traveling, collecting art and cooking together. They reside in Scottsdale, and each has two children (Jonathan and Sydney Edwards, and Arielle and Zachary Cohen).

Steve proposed to Marcy while on a 1970s rock music cruise in March that they attended with three other couples. During the cruise, which featured bands like America, Styx, Michael McDonald, The Guess Who, Air Supply, War and BJ Thomas, there was a game show called “Battle of the Sexes.” Steve arranged for them to be contestants on the show, which involved questions to see if men or women understood each other better.

During the game, the cruise director asked the contestants “on what day during the ‘Rock and Romance’ cruise, did Steve propose to Marcy?” Steve then walked across the stage to Marcy, got on one knee, and proposed. For the remainder of the cruise, passengers stopped to congratulate them.

The day after their wedding next March, the couple will fly to Florida for the 2019 “Rock and Roll” cruise for the beginning of their lifelong honeymoon.
