Daughter of Lisa and Kevin Aiken of St. Charles, Emily Aiken formed a team for the Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists and has become the largest source of non-profit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. Last year the St. Louis affiliate raised more than $3.25 million in net proceeds and had over 66,000 participants.
Emily became more aware of this terrible disease a few years ago after her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her aunt has struggled with the disease as well. Emily started her mitzvah project by making bracelets for Circle of Hope and then decided to form her own team for the race, Team Twilight.
By asking friends and family to make a donation toward Team Twilight, Emily, a student at Francis Howell Middle School, was able to raise over $1,800 for Komen for the Cure.
“That is $800 over my original goal,” said an excited Emily. “I felt really good knowing I was able to help others and raise money to help fight this disease. It meant a lot to my aunt and grandma that I chose to do this in honor of them. I was overwhelmed to see how many people were there for the race. I was excited at how many people supported my team by making contributions and/or walking with us.”
