Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, is coming up on the evening of October 4, 2023. If Yom Kippur feels extra heavy for you this year, we’ve got some good news: Emmy-nominated actress, neuroscientist, and Jewish mama Mayim Bialik is here to bring some levity and clarity to the Jewish holiday as part of her new series for MyJewishLearning, “You Know How I Know?”

In the delightful short video, Mayim breaks down this Jewish fast day, which, after the joys of Rosh Hashanah, “comes in like a wrecking ball and takes away your food and your sex and fancy leather shoes.” So true.

She also shared an important PSA: If you only go to synagogue one day a year, Yom Kippur is probably not the best occasion — hanging out with grumpy, hungry Jews is no one’s idea of a good time!

Still, Mayim reminds us, Yom Kippur holds great lessons about the possibilities of forgiveness, repentance, and an amazing chance to feel like angels. Aw.
