Ladue Horton Watkins High School chemistry teacher, Aly Levine, was a recipient of the 2018 Yale Educator Award. The Yale Educator Recognition Program recognizes outstanding educators from around the world who have supported and inspired their students to achieve at high levels. A member of Congregation Temple Israel, Levine was one of 371 nominees representing 42 states and 12 countries.
Paul Gallant, 85, and Harvey Schneider, 82, are among the 14 who will be honored at the Ageless Remarkable St. Louisans Gala. St. Andrew’s Resources Charitable Foundation is hosting the gala, which is celebrating the outstanding achievements of inspirational and dynamic adults age 75 and older. The gala takes place Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch.
Gallant, CPA and financial consultant, provides volunteer services for several community organizations, including Kingdom House and Healing Action. An avid runner, he is founder and current board chair of GO!STL, and was inducted into the St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame at age 75. Last year, Gallant co-wrote with Richard Weiss the book, “The Grand Journey: Lessons Learned while Navigating Wild Animals and Wilder Times with our Grandkids.” Gallant attends Congregation B’nai Amoona.
Schneider, an attorney, continues to mediate and bring together communities by serving as a board member and past president of the Interfaith Partnership and the Jewish Community Relations Council. He is co-founder of the Schneider Interfaith Forum at Congregation Shaare Emeth, where he attends. Schneider is also an advisory director and corporate secretary of T.C. Jacoby & Co., a privately held dairy business
Ed Protzel’s new book, “The Antiquities Dealer (A David Greenberg Mystery),” will be released on Nov. 5 by TouchPoint Press. It is the first in a series of adventures following David Greenberg, a Jewish antiquities gallery owner who is drawn into a plot to clone the great minds of history. The story is set in St. Louis and Israel. A Kindle version is available for pre-order on Amazon.
Gail Armstrong is the new development director of B’nai Amoona. She is responsible for on-going fundraising, endowments and legacy giving.
Joy and Jay Liss will be given the Harris Frank Community Service Award at Shaare Emeth’s Annual Heart & Soul Gala taking place on Oct. 13. They are being honored for their commitment to inclusiveness and overall service and support to their congregation, the St. Louis Jewish community and greater St. Louis community. Stan Shanker will be honored with the Tzedek Award for his passion towards helping others both within the congregation and in the community at large. Shanker’s on-going involvement with the International Institute of St. Louis in assisting New Americans exemplifies the Jewish value of tzedek.
Nancy Kranzberg is one of 10 women who will be recognized at the YWCA’s 2018 Leaders of Distinction luncheon. She is being honored for her long time philanthropy and community volunteerism. The event will take place on Dec. 6 at the Union Station Hotel.
Chef Larry Gerstein’s Championship Catering was a recent recipient of the Future 50 Awards presented by the St. Louis Small Business Monthly. This award honors the area’s top businesses for demonstrating outstanding business practices and success as well as contributions to our local community.
Susan Brown and Joyce Gang were recently elected co-presidents of Kol Rinah’s sisterhood for a two-year term.
Becca Levine is the new assistant director of the Polsky Religious School at Congregation Beth Shalom in Overland Park, Kan. She is also their coordinator of Family Education and Engagement where she creates innovative and inspiring programs to engage congregational families.
Legal Services of Eastern Missouri honored attorneys Julie Berkowitz and Thomas Glick at its annual For The Common Good Awards Luncheon. They were recognized for their dedication and commitment to serving low-income families. Berkowitz practices elder law and estate planning at her firm, Law Office of Julie Berkowitz. Glick, of the Law Offices of Thomas G. Glick, specializes on the estates of decedents, people who are incapacitated and minors, as well as special education law.
Mindy Horwitz has joined Tips on Trips and Camps as the St. Louis adviser. She provides the service free of charge to families looking for summer camps and adventures for children 7 to 18 years old. Horwitz attends Kol Rinah.
Barry J. Schneider, formerly of St. Louis, was elected National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA. He is a retired Air Force Major with 20 years of active military service. The JWV is the nation’s oldest active veterans’ organization.
Former baseball pitcher Ken Holtzman was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. As one of the most decorated Illini players ever, he spent 15 years in the MLB playing with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A’s.
